The global showpiece tournament will see 24 men’s and, for the first time, 16 women’s teams battling it out to be crowned world champions at The Sevens venue from March 5-7.
“Rugby World Cup Sevens 2009 looks set to be a spectacular tournament, bringing together the global Rugby community for three days of world class Rugby Sevens. The Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens, held in November, attracted record crowds of 50,000 each day, generating a festival atmosphere and giving us a snapshot of what to expect in March," said Rugby World Cup Sevens Tournament Director Beth Coalter.
“Dubai 2009 is on track to be the best Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament to date. Everything is in place to deliver a world class tournament and I am sure that the 40 teams and the thousands of travelling fans from all over the world will experience an event to savour."
The opening two rounds of the popular IRB Sevens World Series have set the scene for an extremely competitive Rugby World Cup Sevens. The performances of Kenya, Portugal and the USA suggest that they are closing the gap on the top teams and are now genuine contenders alongside the likes of South Africa, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa and England.
The women’s competition promises to be equally as competitive. The global qualification process for Rugby World Cup Sevens 2009 provided plenty of surprises with Brazil qualifying at the expense of Argentina in South America and Thailand upsetting the form book to secure their place at the expense of Kazakhstan in Asia.
